I went to check it out!
This is Science Home Soka branch. The other day, I visited the "Former Iwasaki Residence Garden" in Taito Ward, Tokyo.
The former Iwasaki Residence Garden was built in 1896 as the main residence of Hisaya Iwasaki, the third president of Mitsubishi.
In its heyday, the site covered 15,000 tsubo (approximately 50,000 square meters) and reportedly had as many as 20 buildings. Currently, only three buildings remain: the Western-style building, the billiard room, and the large Japanese-style hall. In 1961, the Western-style building and the billiard room were designated as important national cultural properties under the name "Former Iwasaki Family Residence." In 1969, the large Japanese-style hall and the wing wall on the east side of the Western-style building were added to the designation, and in 1999, the entire site, including the brick wall, and the measured drawings were also added.
The Western-style building features magnificent decorations in the 17th-century English Jacobean style throughout, and the second floor even has a guest room with precious gilded leather wallpaper.
The unfortunate thing was...
It's rare in Japan at the time to have a billiard hall in the style of a Swiss mountain lodge, connected to a Western-style building by an underground passage. The day I visited it was closed to the public so I couldn't see it, but I was told that it's open to the public on the 15th of every month on a first-come, first-served basis!
It was very impressive to see so many different architectural styles all at once!
It was a day where I was able to spend precious time♪
