Introducing the town of Soka
This is Science Home Soka store. Today, we will introduce "Winter Preparations for Pine Trees."
November 7th marks the beginning of winter. When you think of Soka City, you think of "Soka Senbei" (rice crackers) and the scenic "Soka Matsubara Pine Avenue." On November 8th, the pines in the avenue were wrapped in komo (rice cake), a traditional winter tradition!
The pine trees in Soka Matsubara began in 1792 when 1,230 black pine seedlings were planted, but many of them failed to take root and died, so they were replanted several times. At its peak, there were approximately 2,000 black pine trees, but due to the effects of war and subsequent urbanization, the number has drastically decreased to just over 60.
Thanks to the efforts of Soka City, the Pine Tree Preservation Society, and local residents, the number of trees has now been restored to 634, a number that corresponds to the height of Tokyo Skytree.
Komomaki is a traditional pest control method in which straw mats are wrapped around pine trees before the cold weather sets in to attract pine bark beetles and pine weevils, which are natural enemies of pine trees, and then the mats are removed and burned before the weather warms up.
This year, seven craftsmen carefully wrapped straw around each of the 634 pine trees.
Seeing this seasonal sight is considered auspicious, so some people look forward to seeing Komomaki every year.
The rows of pine trees wrapped in straw can be seen until around the beginning of spring (March 5th), when the straw is removed and burned, so if you have time, why not come and see the sight of the rows of pine trees preparing for winter?
*What is Keichitsu?
This refers to the period from around March 5th to around March 19th when insects that have been hibernating underground wake up and start crawling out onto the ground.
