Plaster

2025/05/18 blog

This is Science Home Soka store. Today, I would like to introduce you to "plaster".

Plaster is a building material made of slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) and is used to finish walls, ceilings, etc.

Slaked lime is made by baking limestone at high temperatures of over 1000 degrees and adding water. This limestone is a natural material that has accumulated over a long period of time from coral reefs. Plaster is made by adding binders such as glue and straw to this slaked lime.

In fact, plaster is used on some of the walls on the second floor of the Soka store.

Depending on the pattern and color, plaster walls can be designed in a variety of styles, from Western to Japanese. They are also said to be breathable walls, as they regulate humidity and eliminate unpleasant odors inside the home.

It is also recommended for people with allergies or sick building syndrome!

Because it is alkaline, it has a sterilizing effect, has a dehumidifying function that eliminates condensation, and prevents the growth of mold and dust mites that cause allergies, so it is often used in living rooms and children's rooms.

Plaster is more expensive than wallpaper or paint. This is because it requires high skill to maintain a beautiful finish, and the application requires the experience and skill of a craftsman. It is applied carefully by hand, so application is time-consuming, with higher labor costs and time, making it more expensive than other wall materials.

However, it is a naturally occurring material, and has a number of characteristics, such as being resistant to dust and dirt, being able to maintain a constant humidity level, being highly durable, and breaking down formaldehyde, which makes it an attractive building material.
